Protection Paladin Tanking Stat Guide
First of all, the two most important stats for your tanking paladin are going to be stamina and strength. In any situtation where you have to choose between stats, you’re going to want to get bonuses to either or these two, unless of course you haven’t met your hit, defense, parry or block cap. These are important as well, but given that you’ve hit them, you’re going to want to take Stamina and Strength for paladin tanking.
The most important bonus is Defense. At level 80, in order to hit your cap to tank raid bosses and basically anything in the game, you need to somehow hit a rating of 540 with your talents and gear combined. Remember, just because something says it raises defense, doesn’t mean that it raises your “defense rating” by the same amount. It all depends on your level. One surefire way to make sure you’re looking at defense rating is by checking it in the character screen. Once you get your tanking protection paladin up to 540 defense, raid bosses will no longer be able to land critical hits on you. This is necessary for anybody who wants to raid, since critical hits from bosses and spike your health up and down, making it harder to heal through and a host of different things. 540 Defense Rating.
As far as Stamina goes, this is extremely important because it gives you more life. While it’s true that if you’ve got your defense raiting up to the cap, bosses won’t be able to critically strike you while Paladin tanking…if you don’t have the base life to survive a few damage spikes, you’re not going to survive. All the Parry and Dodge in the world won’t help you if you’ve got a poor base life bonus. Stamina also helps your threat generation IF you’ve got points in Touched by the Light. With that 30% extra spell power, you’ve got some more threat coming with it too. Stamina is extremely important.
Strength might not seem like a likely candidate for an important stat for paladin protection tanking, but it provides two very real bonuses to your surivability and tanking power. First, it helps you generate extra threat while dealing damage, because you’re dealing more. Secondly, if you’re a protection paladin tanking, you’re going to be using a shield. More strength means a better block value, thus more damage mitigation.
Once you’ve got your Defense Capped at 540., Stamina and Strength taken care of, you can also start to look at Agility for the dodge bonus, Hit Rating for more threat, and Block, but the previous stats should not be sacrificed to get these. Cheers!
